Legendary watch brands and iconic models

We've selected two watches that are without a doubt icons in their own right. Both demonstrate the art of creating an iconic timepiece that is loved by many across decades even though it reflects the character of the era it was first introduced in. Both watches have also had a role in establishing Jaeger-LeCoultre and Rolex as brands that are known to create watches that become true classics.

Military watches are hot, and always have been, in the land of watch collectors. Add a chronograph, no, a flyback chronograph in the mix and some of you already might have guessed that we are talking about the Heuer Bund Flyback Chronograph here. These Heuer chronographs were – for their time – large pieces with their 42mm diameter cases and officially issued to military pilots.

In this series of articles, we’ll take a look at watch pairs. We’ve selected an elegant dress watch and a sports watch for each pairing; two watches that complement each other and offer their wearer an appropriate watch for any occasion. This time we chose the IWC Portuguese Chronograph and the Panerai Luminor Marina 8 Days.

Casual sports watches that bore a prestigious watch brand on the dial didn’t really exist until about 40+ years ago. However, during the 70s, there were plenty of brands that were all vying to claim they had a timepiece that would not only look good in the office, but also handle the ski slopes and a yachting trip or two during the weekends. Therefor Vacheron Constantin built the ‘222,’ which was intended to mark the brand's 222th anniversary.

The Breguet Classique 5157 is a classic thin timepiece that comes in 18-karat white gold and yellow gold. At only 38 mm in diameter and 5.4 mm thick, this is a piece for typical formal occasions, as are most Breguet watches. Vacheron Constantin is also well known for their classic timepieces, but as an ‘opposite’ for this week's watch pair, we picked their Overseas Chronograph. To be honest, while the Overseas is a sports watch, it is not a rugged piece you'd want to take out hiking, mountain climbing, sailing, or to other extreme activities.

Whilst these two timepieces are complete opposites in many ways — one better suited to casual attire, the other more formal — they share one main trait: their iconic designs. Both have looks that can not only be recognised from afar, but have also shaped their past, present, and foreseeable future. This pair of watches may possibly be the only two watches any person could ever need…

There is no doubt that vintage mechanical watches are (still) hot right now. So much so, in fact, that it’s almost impossible to buy a historically significant piece without parting with a small fortune. As with anything in life though, if you dig a little deeper, you can always find one or two hidden gems. The Universal Genève Polerouter is one such example. Designed by the legendary Gérald Genta in the early 1950s, the Polerouter quickly became a big success. It was considered on par with similar models from the likes of Rolex and Omega.

In today’s installment of “Watch Pairs," we’ll be taking a closer look at pieces from Glashütte Original and Tudor that would make a wonderful and wearable two-watch collection. At the sportier end of the spectrum, we’ve got a dive watch coming from Tudor’s Heritage collection known as the Black Bay. This bold sports watch contrasts boldly with the sophisticated and timelessly executed Senator Automatic from Germany’s own Glashütte Original - a watch that embodies traditional watchmaking in its purest form.

In this article we will look at some of the most expensive watches in the world. These watches don’t cost several thousand Euros, they don’t cost as much as a new Porsche 911 Turbo, they are “out-of-this-world-expensive”, in some cases even millions. For. One. Watch.

In our continuing effort to highlight some of the great vintage watches out there, we would like to shine a light on one of the bigger, well-known brands in the horological world. For this article, we've chosen to look at the IWC Ingenieur line and focus on the very first model in particular: the IWC Ingenieur with a devilish reference, the 666. Back in the day, it was said to be devilishly good.
