Inspired by a traditional diver’s helmet, Gérald Genta’s masterpiece - the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak - is the original luxury sports watch. This 50th anniversary model, the 16204OR, is where “openworking makes its comeback”, in the words of AP themselves. At 39mm, the watch is sized according to Genta’s original dimensions, rooting the watch in history, and its satin-brushed case and bracelet are crafted from a sumptuous 18k pink gold, Audemars Piguet’s patented private blend, often considered by connoisseurs to be the most attractive rose gold in the world. The openworked, slate-grey dial affords the wearer an insight into AP’s incredible engineering, and with its pink gold-applied hour markers and hands, contrasts elegantly with the warmth of the watch’s immaculate octagonal case and integrated bracelet, unrivalled in the way they play with light. The double hash at 12 o’clock returns the Royal Oak to its 1972 heritage, the AP signature double deployant clasp ensures superlative comfort, and as a final flourish, the sapphire display caseback offers a view of the stunning, newly-developed in-house cal.7124 movement, complete with 22k gold ‘50th Anniversary’ rotor.
