Graham Watches: Chronographs Like No Other

Graham watches combine traditional English watchmaking from the 17th and 18th centuries with state-of-the-art Swiss engineering. Flashy chronographs dominate their catalog, including some models with unusual complications.

English Tradition Meets Swiss Craftsmanship

Graham is an independent luxury watch manufacturer located in La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland. Founded in 1995, the company is among the youngest watch brands. However, thanks to their unorthodox designs and high quality products, it has taken Graham very little time to make a name for themselves. If you're on the market for an eccentric timepiece, you can't go wrong with a Graham watch.

The Chronofighter family of chronographs is particularly eye-catching. Both the unusual crown and chronograph pushers sit on the case's left-hand side. The start/stop pusher is integrated into the crown and is operated using a trigger, which sits atop the crown. The unconventional design continues on the dial. In addition to classic sunburst dials in a wide range of colors, you'll find models featuring printed tigers, bears, dragons, or pin-up models. Select timepieces also boast an additional complication, such as a tourbillon or second time zone.

The Swordfish demands just as much attention as the Chronofighter series. These timepieces measure an impressive 46 mm in diameter and also come with a stopwatch function. Whether the crown and pushers are located on the left or right varies by model; however, the overall design is much more traditional. The porthole-shaped magnifying lenses above the subdials at 3 and 9 o'clock make these watches truly stand out. The final result resembles two bulging, fish-like eyes.

The final two collections are the Silverstone and the Geo.Graham. The former is comprised of modern racing chronographs, while the latter is dedicated to the company's namesake, English clockmaker George Graham. Graham was a member of the Royal Society and created astronomical instruments for the Royal Observatory at Greenwich, among other things. In a nod to Graham's work, each Geo.Graham watch features a tourbillon, including versions paired with a {lex-moonphase,moon phase display} or planetarium.

Graham outfits their timepieces with ETA movements, which they have modified to their specifications by the traditional Swiss company La Joux-Perret. This only adds to their already sterling reputation.

Reasons to Buy a Graham Watch

  • Unique designs
  • ETA calibers modified by La Joux-Perret
  • Top models with a tourbillon, planetarium, or second time zone

Far From Ordinary: The Chronofighter

The Chronofighter is by far the largest Graham watch collection. The company's designers took inspiration from vintage pilot's chronographs from the 1930s and 40s when crafting the Chronofighter Vintage. This timepiece features a black, white, olive green, or blue sunburst dial, which feels especially clean thanks to its narrow line indices and tapered sword hands. A large "12" further increases this watch's readability. There's a small seconds at 3 o'clock, as well as a 30-minute counter at 6. The day-date display sits at 9 o'clock.

Graham offers the Chronofighter Vintage with a stainless steel or bronze case. Both versions are 44 mm in diameter and feature an unmistakeable crown and pusher design. The manufacturer equips this model with the G1747 movement, a modified version of the Valjoux 7750.

Be sure to have about 4,200 USD on hand for a stainless steel Chronofighter Vintage. The bronze edition costs significantly more at around 7,200 USD.

Chronofighter Vintage Special and Nose Art

Those who find the standard Chronofighter Vintage a bit too understated should turn to the Special Series and Nose Art lines. These watches share their technology with the Chronofighter Vintage but have decidedly more extravagant dials.

The Chronofighter Vintage Special Series contains dials adorned with tigers, bears, and Chinese dragons, among other motifs. Graham also offers versions with brightly painted skeletons in honor of the Mexican holiday Día de Muertos, as well as models with a Union Jack dial. Prices for Special Series watches range from 4,600 to 5,400 USD, depending on the model.

As the name implies, Chronofighter Vintage Nose Art timepieces feature pin-up models inspired by the images American Air Force pilots would paint on their planes' noses during the Second World War. Graham's designers created ten pin-ups in total, each with an airplane-worthy name like Belle, Chloé, Lilly, or Merry. You can purchase a Chronofighter Nose Art for roughly 4,500 USD.

Oversized Chronofighter Watches

Graham ceased production of the 47-mm Chronofighter Oversize in 2018. This chronograph has a more modern feel overall thanks to its large Arabic numerals at 6 and 12 o'clock, small seconds at 3, minute counter at 9, and reworked pusher mechanism. The company also turned to La Joux-Perret and an altered Valjoux 7750 for this watch – in this case, the Graham caliber G1742. Well-maintained models change hands for between 2,700 and 3,500 USD.

The Chronofighter Steel and Target are direct descendants of the Oversize. Both boast even more modern designs. Their glow-in-the-dark numerals and carbon pushers call to mind the kinds of watches worn by special forces units. A black ceramic bezel inlay completes the look. Unlike the Chronofighter Steel, the Target has a transparent dial that offers a view of the Valjoux 7750–based caliber G1747 underneath. Otherwise, the two models are nearly identical. The Chronofighter Steel demands around 5,300 USD, while the Chronofighter Target sells for anywhere between 4,300 and 4,700 USD.

The Chronofighter Grand Vintage combines the Oversize's measurements with the retro charm of other Vintage models. Moreover, the Grand Vintage stands out from its 44-mm cousins with its magnified date window and lack of day display. This retro chronograph requires an investment of between 5,800 and 6,800 USD.

Carbon Chronofighter Models

If you like the look of the Chronofighter Steel but prefer lighter watches, the Graham Chronofighter Superlight might just be the timepiece for you. Instead of stainless steel, Graham crafts the Superlight's case out of a state-of-the-art material: carbon. Otherwise, there is very little difference between the Superlight and the Steel. Prices for this extra-light chronograph sit around 11,000 USD.

The Chronofighter Superlight Carbon Skeleton is slightly more budget-friendly. This model does without a dial completely, granting an unobstructed view of the intricately skeletonized movement within. This version costs between 8,300 and 9,200 USD.

Limited to a run of 100 pieces, the Chronofighter Superlight Carbon Skeleton Tourbillograph is a real treat. It features a specially-developed minute tourbillon at 4 o'clock, which also doubles as a small seconds. You can call this rare chronograph your own for roughly 28,000 USD.

The Chronofighter with a GMT Function

Graham also produces the Chronofighter with a GMT function. Their current catalog contains two options: the Chronofighter Vintage GMT and the Chronofighter GMT. Like the other Vintage models, the Vintage GMT is a retro timepiece with a rather simple sunburst dial and line indices. However, Graham equips this version with an oversized date at 12 o'clock. Subdials for the small seconds and minute counter are located at 3 and 9 o'clock, respectively. An additional central hand works in conjunction with the black ceramic bezel's 24-hour scale to show the time in a second time zone. The caliber G1733 ticks away inside this timepiece. As with all Graham chronograph calibers, this movement is based on the Valjoux 7750.

The Chronofighter Vintage GMT is available with a gray, black, green, brown, or blue dial and costs 4,700 USD on average.

The other version, the Chronofighter GMT, comes with the same technology as the Vintage edition; however, its appearance is much more modern. Its dial is split into sections: There's a brushed outer dial ring with luminous Arabic numerals and a central disc with a sunburst pattern. The subdials also feature the same sunburst design. A wide GMT hand and sapphire bezel inlay round off this timepiece. Plan to spend around 4,900 USD on this model.

A Chronofighter for Divers

Graham has also taken divers' needs into account with the Chronofighter Prodive. This timepiece combines the practicality of a chronograph with the durability of a diving watch. There's nothing else like it in the Chronofighter collection. Wide bar indices filled with white luminous material dominate the dark dial. Bright white SuperLuminova also coats the hour and minute hands. The SuperLuminova glows either blue or green in the dark depending on the component, making it easier to tell the time and chronograph functions apart. The dial also features a small seconds at 4, minute counter at 8, and date display at 9 o'clock.

The 45-mm stainless steel case is paired with wide lugs and a massive diving bezel. The unidirectional bezel features four rider tabs for ease of use when wearing diving gloves. Graham's engineers also took the Chronofighter's typical chronograph pusher and crown design back to the drawing board. The result is a screw-down crown at 10 o'clock and a monopusher-style chronograph. The pusher sits within the case and is operated via a trigger at 8 o'clock. Graham achieves this by modifying the Valjoux 7750 to create the monopusher G1750 movement.

Thanks to its unique design, the Chronofighter Prodive is water-resistant to 2,000 ft (approx. 600 m, 60 bar). The presence of an automatic helium escape valve means that this timepiece is even suitable for saturation diving.

This diving chronograph demands about 5,000 USD with a brushed stainless steel case. The version with black DLC coating costs slightly more at 6,000 USD.

Swordfish: A Dinstinctive Chronograph

Searching for a watch with a little personality? Well, look no further than the Graham Swordfish. Thanks to a pair of porthole-shaped magnifying lenses, these chronographs are sure to attract plenty of attention. One lens sits above the 30-minute counter at 3 o'clock, and the other is located above the dual 12-hour counter and small seconds at 9.

Graham crafts the 46-mm case out of stainless steel or bronze. The bronze edition is available with a black or olive green dial, while steel watches come with a black or silver dial. You can also choose whether you want your Swordfish to have its crown and pushers on the case's left or right side. Prices for this chronograph depend on the model. Stainless steel versions cost between 3,100 and 4,300 USD. On the other hand, bronze watches demand upwards of 6,500 USD.

Graham also produced the Swordfish with a GMT function until 2018. These watches are easy to spot since they have two crowns – one at 2 and another at 4 o'clock – and only one magnifying lens for the date display at 3. A 24-hour display at 9 o'clock completes the look. You can purchase a well-maintained Swordfish GMT for about 4,900 USD.

Silverstone: A Racing Chronograph

It's no coincidence that Graham named their racing chronograph collection Silverstone after the famous Formula 1 racing circuit in England. The company has a long history with motorsport and even sponsored the Brawn GP Formula 1 team from 2009 until 2011. Silverstone watches resemble the dashboard displays found in racing cars. Large luminous indices and Graham's distinctive wide sword hands dominate the dial. Of course, no racing watch is complete without a tachymeter bezel.

The Silverstone RS debuted in 2019. This modern timepiece features a colorful bezel inlay made of composite plastic, which is paired with a matching rubber strap that resembles a tire's treads. The pushers and crown are both relatively shallow and sunken slightly into the case. In addition to the standard editions, you'll also find a Silverstone model with a GMT function and another with a skeletonized dial. Prices for a Silverstone RS begin around 4,500 USD. If you prefer the Silverstone RS GMT, be sure to budget some 5,600 USD. Finally, the Silverstone RS Skeleton changes hands for roughly 7,400 USD.

Older Silverstone models include the Silverstone Stowe and Silverstone Vintage. You can recognize these timepieces by their mushroom-shaped pushers and large, screw-down crowns. Graham modeled the Silverstone Vintage's dial after those of classic chronographs from decades gone by. With its colorful dial and bezel accents, some consider the Silverstone Stowe the predecessor of the current Silverstone RS.

The Silverstone Stowe sells for between 4,200 and 5,000 USD, while the Silverstone Vintage costs anywhere from 2,700 to 5,200 USD depending on the exact model.

Geo.Graham: Astronomical Masterpieces

Both the company and the "Geo.Graham" collection get their names from George Graham. In the early 18th century, Graham was one of England's most famous clockmakers and astronomers. The entire Geo.Graham collection pays homage to Graham's work. The company outfits these timepieces with calibers developed specifically for them, including some with highly intricate complications.

The Geo.Graham Orrey Tourbillon is an especially fascinating example. The tourbillon takes center stage on this 18-karat pink gold masterpiece. Its golden cage is composed of two phoenixes intertwined around a central diamond. In this miniature planetarium, the tourbillon represents the Sun. A small Earth and Moon are joined by Mars on their cosmic dance around the tourbillon. While the Earth is made of turquoise, Graham uses genuine Mars and moon rock to depict their respective celestial bodies. This miniature cosmos is fully functional, with the Earth also indicating the current date and zodiac sign on two separate scales. When it comes to actual timekeeping, the Orrey Tourbillon uses a pair of off-center hour and minute hands. A final feature appears when you flip the watch over, revealing an additional display for the current year.

The Orrey Tourbillon is an extremely rare timepiece: There are only 20 copies of the version with a black dial and a further 5 units with blue dials. Prices for this impressive wearable planetarium sit around 243,000 USD.

The Moon

The Geo.Graham The Moon is no less spectacular. Its dial is divided into two large sections. A highly artistic tourbillon occupies much of the dial below 6 o'clock, while the upper half features a fantastic moon phase indicator. Small diamonds dot the space in between, twinkling like stars in the night sky. What makes the moon phase indicator truly special is that it is actually a retrograde display, meaning its hand-painted moon disc jumps back to its original position at the end of every cycle.

Graham only produced 16 copies of this timepiece: eight in white gold with a black dial and eight in pink gold with a blue dial. Prices vary based on the model and range from 75,000 to 173,000 USD.

Geo.Graham Tourbillon

Defining features of the Geo.Graham Tourbillon include narrow pear-shaped hands, a railroad minute track with Arabic numerals, Roman-numeral hour markers, and a tourbillon at 6 o'clock. This model is perhaps the most classic watch in Graham's entire portfolio and is the direct descendant of some of the manufacturer's most important historical timepieces.

For something with a less classic feel, Graham also offer a version without a dial. This watch's numerals and minute track sit directly atop the movement's finely decorated base plate.

The Geo.Graham Tourbillon has an 18-karat pink gold case and demands about 51,000 USD with a white dial. If you prefer the edition without a dial, you'll have to be patient; Graham only ever manufactured 26 such timepieces, making them extremely rare.

The History of Graham Watches

Graham's history began in 1995, when Swiss engineer and metallurgist Eric Loth decided to found a watch company. His fascination with traditional English watchmaking from the 17th and 18th centuries inspired the business' original name: The British Masters. Eventually, this grew into two separate brands – Arnold & Son and Graham.

The Graham watch company follows in the footsteps of George Graham, the father of the chronograph and inventor of numerous revolutionary horological components, including the dead-beat escapement, cylinder escapement, and the temperature-compensated mercury pendulum. What's more, Graham was a member of the Royal Society and created astronomical instruments for the Royal Observatory at Greenwich. With this in mind, it's clear why Graham's catalog is overflowing with chronographs and watches with astronomical functions.

Graham is located in La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland and remains an independent company to this day.
