HYT: Watches With Meca-Fluid Technology

HYT have carved a niche in the market with watches that use fluid to tell time. These timepieces combine innovative technology with the fine art of watchmaking. Highlights include the Skull, Moon Runner, and Conical Tourbillon.

Young, Innovative & Unique

Luxury watch manufacturer HYT is a newcomer to the watch industry. Founded in the west of Switzerland in 2012, the brand has risen to prominence with their unconventional and innovate watch creations.

HYT's specialty is mechanical-fluidic technology, which combines traditional mechanical movement technology with an extraordinary fluid display. In practice, the watches display the minutes and seconds with hands as normal, but the hours are displayed by means of a colored fluid.

This fluid is initially stored in a bellow, which is then compressed by the movement mechanism and pumped into a small tube. This tube is less than 1 mm thick and forms a ring around the dial. In its initial state, the tube is filled with a second, transparent fluid that cannot mix with the colored fluid. When the colored fluid is pressed into the tube, it displaces the transparent solution into a second bellow. The hour is indicated by the point where the two fluids intersect (what HYT calls "marriage"). Every twelve hours, the colored fluid is pumped back, and the process starts again.

HYT combine the meca-fluid display with some impressive complications. Watches in the Moon Runner collection feature a three-dimensional moon phase display, while the star of the Conical Tourbillon series boasts a tourbillon made of 159 individual parts right in the middle of its dial.

HYT watches are released in strictly limited numbers. The manufacturer usually only produces 20 to 50 copies of each model.

How much does a HYT watch cost?

Prices for HYT watches start at around 22,000 USD on Chrono24. This amount is enough to get you a model like the H0 Black. Watches in the H1 collection run between 27,000 and 40,000 USD. Models from the H2 and H20 series demand considerably higher, so you can expect to spend between 82,000 and 165,000 USD, depending on the version. The rare HYT H3 with its rectangular case can even cost upwards of 220,000 USD. The H4 models are in the middle price tier at about 50,000 USD.

The popular HYT Skull, which gets its name from the skull-shaped fluid display, can be yours for between roughly 24,000 and 65,000 USD, depending on the version.

If you're interested in a HYT watch from the brand's current generation like the Hasteroid or Moon Runner, you'll have to reckon with an investment of between 66,000 and 110,000 USD.

HYT H0 to H5: The First Generation

HYT's first ever watch was the H1. This timepiece uses the in-house caliber 101, which was created in collaboration with Jean-François Mojon from Chronode. The movement offers a 65-hour power reserve and was designed as a regulator, meaning it has a separate display for the hours, minutes, and seconds. The fluid display on the outer edge of the watch shows the hours, while the minutes are read from an off-center dial at 12 o'clock. The small seconds is housed at 9:30, while you'll find a power reserve indicator opposite it at 2:30. The lower third of the H1 is dominated by the two bellows, which are on full display through the dial cutout.

The 48.8-mm titanium watch has a sporty, modern design with angular lugs, a winding crown at 2:30, and a crown guard. The case is available with either a satin-brush finish or a black, scratch-resistant DLC coating. An example of the former version is the H1 Iceberg, which features a white minute dial and blue fluid display. The H1 Iceberg costs around 29,000 USD on Chrono24. The H1 Dracula has a black coating, while the liquid, crown, and other details on the otherwise black dial are executed in blood red. Prices sit around 38,000 USD.

The HYT H0 also uses the caliber 101, though in terms of design, the HYT H0 and H1 are worlds apart. The H0 models don't have a bezel in the conventional sense, instead, they have a sapphire crystal that forms a dome around the display, similar to a bell jar. HYT also decided against visible lugs and a crown guard. The sides of the watch, which are now under the crystal, host the hour scale.

You can buy the H0 in titanium, black-coated stainless steel, or yellow gold. Prices range from approximately 20,000 to 45,000 USD, again depending on the exact version.

H2 and H20: New Movement and Functions

The HYT H2 and H20 models share the same case design as the H1 and H0, respectively. However, this generation is powered by the skeletonized caliber 201. This movement was developed according to HYT's specifications by movement supplier Renaud & Papi, which belongs to Audemars Piguet, and offers some interesting features. The minutes are indicated by a central hand, and there is no longer a small seconds or power reserve indicator. Taking their places is a crown position indicator at 2:30 and a temperature display at 9:30, which tells the wearer whether the temperature inside the watch is in the optimal range. This is useful because the fluid can react to major temperature fluctuations, especially when the watch is not being worn. According to HYT, the temperature should always be in the optimal range when worn on the wrist.

Another innovation seen in the caliber 201 is the position of the bellows, now forming a 90° angle on the lower third of the watch. The caliber 201 has two barrels, giving the H2 and H20 a power reserve that can last up to eight days.

HYT offers the H2 Tradition and H20 Tradition, with a somewhat more classic design. They feature an off-center subdial for the minutes and a small seconds. The movement had to be adapted accordingly and was named the caliber 210.

Prices for the H2 and the H20 are fairly diverse; depending on which model and version you choose, you'll need to invest anywhere between 50,000 and 110,000 USD.

HYT H3: Linear Meca-Fluid Technology

The HYT H3 takes another step out of the ordinary with a rectangular case. The hours and minutes are displayed horizontally from left to right. The minutes use a retrograde scale from 0 to 60 in the lower right half of the watch's "dial," as well as a special hand. The hours are displayed as we've come to know from HYT as a fluid display, but in another new format: The scale consists of six blocks lined up in a row, with the sides numbered 0 to 23. Initially, the numbers from 0 to 5 are visible, but when the liquid reaches the end of the tube after six hours and returns to the starting position, the blocks rotate one position to show 6 to 11, i.e., the next six hours. These mechanics allow the watch to display all 24 hours of the day.

The HYT H3 is a rare find on the secondary market. If you're lucky enough to find a copy, you'll need to have over 220,000 USD on hand.

HYT H4: The Watch With Dynamo

The HYT H4 looks rather similar to the H1 at first. This mostly comes down to the caliber 401, which is basically a skeletonized version of the caliber 101 with some other minor upgrades. However, the H4 is larger at 51 mm across, and has an extra crown with an integrated push-piece at 4 o'clock. The additional crown winds a separate spring. If the wearer then presses the push-piece, the spring activates a small dynamo, which in turn uses its electricity to light up an LED underneath the bellows. The wearer can thus read the time in all lighting conditions – all without a battery.

You can buy the HYT H4 for around 43,000 USD on Chrono24. Collector's items like the H4 Alinghi, which was created for the sailing team of the same name, can demand up to 80,000 USD.

HYT H5 With an Optimized Caliber

The HYT H5 was launched in 2019 and has a similar design to the H0. In fact, the case, domed sapphire crystal, and displays are almost identical. The movement, however, was overhauled by famous watchmaker Eric Coudray and christened the caliber 501. It has a new camshaft concept that's controlled by the bellows, resulting in a significantly more accurate fluid display.

The eye-catching detail on the H5 is the large luminescent numerals that wrap around the side of the watch. They lend the timepiece a particularly modern look.

Plan to spend around 38,000 to 50,000 USD on a HYT H5.

HYT Skull

The watches in the Skull collection are very popular among fans of the brand. These models are basically modified versions of the HYT H1 to H4. Unlike those watches, however, the Skull models exude a slightly morbid charm, as the dial hosts a large stylized skull. HYT's signature fluid indicator forms the skull's outline, and the two bellows its teeth. Two disc-like indicators also rotate in the skull's eye sockets: The left eye serves as a running seconds, the right as the power reserve indicator. There is no minute display.

There are several different versions of the HYT Skull, which can be found on Chrono24 for between roughly 22,000 and 66,000 USD.

HYT Hasteroid, Moon Runner & Conical Tourbillon

In 2022, on the heels of financial difficulties and a corporate restructuring, HYT released a number of new collections. The HYT Hasteroid follows in the footsteps of the H-series.

The Hasteroid comes in a modern 48-mm case that houses the caliber 501 CM. This movement is based on the caliber 501 used in the H5, but offers central minutes. As for materials, you have the choice between DLC-coated titanium, carbon fiber, and bronze.

Prices for the HYT Hasteroid depend on the exact model in question and range from 35,000 to 70,000 USD.

HYT Moon Runner With 3D Moon Phase Display

Fans of unconventional moon phase displays will enjoy the HYT Moon Runner. The position of the Moon is represented by a three-dimensional sphere in the center of the watch's dial. The sphere is framed by two rings, which indicate the day and month. The calendar display is itself surrounded by the minute ring. The grande finale is the meca-fluid display for the hours.

The unusual dial configuration is made possible by the caliber 601 MO, credited to Eric Coudray.

The Moon Runner is produced in strictly limited numbers, so it's not easy to find on the secondary market. If you do happen upon one, expect prices well beyond 100,000 USD.

HYT Conical Tourbillon: Watchmaking at Its Best

The HYT Conical Tourbillon is a watchmaking masterpiece. The centerpiece of the watch is the eponymous tourbillon. It was developed by Eric Coudray and is based on the Oblique Tourbillon designed in 1928 by German watchmaker Walter Prendel. The balance wheel is inclined at 30°, the escape wheel at 15°, and the pallet at 23°. Coudray took things a step further and added three spheres to the tourbillon cage that rotate at different speeds. This guarantees accuracy in all positions.

Only eight copies of this 48-mm watch exist. HYT's list price is 335,000 CHF, which is approximately 385,000 USD.

The History of HYT

HYT Watches was founded in 2012 by Lucien Vouillamoz, Vincent Perriard, Patrick Berdoz, and Emmanuel Savioz in Neuchâtel, Switzerland. Vouillamoz first had the idea of displaying the time using fluid a decade earlier. The concept was eventually implemented with the help of Chronode master watchmaker Jean-François Mojon, and HYT's sister company Preciflex, which developed the liquids for the display.

Success followed shortly thereafter. In fact, HYT was showered with awards that same year. The HYT H1 won the prize for the best innovation at the Grand Prix d'Horlogerie de Genève as well as prizes for the best concept watch at the SIAR in Mexico and the Watch World Awards in India, to name just a few. HYT were inspired by their achievements and introduced a whole range of more meca-fluid watches.

In 2021, HYT was forced to file for bankruptcy and ceased production as part of the liquidation process. At the end of the same year, the Swiss company Kairos Technology Switzerland SA bought HYT's assets and has been producing watches under the brand name since 2022.
