Omega Speedmaster ‘Ed White’
One of our favourite watches here at Oakleigh is a vintage Speedmaster, and this is a very special 1965 Omega Speedmaster ‘Ed White’ – this watch is also known as the ‘Pre-Professional’ – straight lugs, no crown guards, applied logo, 321 movement – the lot.
The 1965 Omega Speedmaster Reference 105.003 is called the “Ed White” because it was the model of watch that Lt Col. Edward Higgins White wore when he became the first American to walk in space on June 3, 1965 – he was later selected as a senior pilot for the first manned Apollo flight but tragically during a test of the spacecraft on January 27th 1967 a fire broke out in the cabin, killing Lt Col. White alongside Gus Grissom and Roger Chaffee.
All of that information makes this watch pretty special but to be honest, I haven’t even started yet….
I bought this watch from a local gentleman who had owned it since 1966 / 1967 when he took it from a friend to settle a debt – the friend had bought it new just a few months before. He then wore the watch for the next forty years, having it serviced regularly by our favourite Omega service agents S Michlmayr & Co
In 2006 the crown fell off the watch (as they sometimes do) and it was considered not worth the cost of the repair so it sat in a drawer until it was shown to me twelve years later. I bought the watch and handed it straight to Simon Michlmayr for a full service and a light clean up and the 7912/6 bracelet was sent to Michael Young in Hong Kong to be refurbished.
I’m sure that the bezel insert on this watch will be the cause of some discussion as it’s not DON. Obviously I can’t say that it’s definitely original to the watch but this watch was owned for 52 years by a man who swears it was never changed and it has only ever been serviced by one watchmaker who have no record of it ever being changed. The fitted insert is also clearly very old and when it was serviced recently, the watchmaker said that it looked like it had been in there ‘forever’…
All of the other key component parts are original 1965 – dial, hands, case, case back, bracelet etc.
Recently serviced and running beautifully – although not guaranteed waterproof – this a very rare piece with great provenance and a superb history.
