This is a pre-owned Rolex Sea-Dweller double red men's 1665 watch. 40mm case size in stainless steel, black dial on a stainless steel oyster bracelet, powered by an automatic movement. This Rolex is in excellent condition complete with box & guarantee. Circa 1978. Our Xupes reference is W5882 should you need to quote this.
Back in 1977, COMEX diver, Jacques Verpeaux, reached the then-unheard-of depth of 501m underwater. That’s deep enough to cause some serious issues and while COMEX dealt with the forces working on the diver, it was up to Rolex to handle the horology. Hence, the Sea-Dweller Double Red.
Essentially a Submariner on steroids, the Sea-Dweller is a bigger, thicker, deeper-diving tool watch. To make it suitable for underwater explorers, Rolex aimed to up the depth resistance from 100m for the 1950s Oyster case to 500m. What they ended up doing was overshooting to a staggering 610m. At the time there was nothing in the world to match it and there are not that many examples even today.
The technical advancements didn’t stop at a thicker steel case and plexiglass crystal; this was also the first Rolex to include a helium escape valve, a safety feature to stop the crystal popping off from a helium build up during decompression. In short, it laid the foundations for the serious diving instruments we have today.
This exact watch is dated to 1978, at the tail end of the Sea-Dweller Double Red’s production run, but just one year after Verpeaux completed his insane dive and has the most common – yet still desirable – Mark IV dial. For a model that helped make diving history, it’s also in fantastic condition.
