Seiko 5 Diving Watch SKX009K2

The Seiko SKX009K2 is a diving watch for beginners looking for an affordable but high-quality timepiece. The blue and red Pepsi bezel makes this model especially popular.

By Chrono24

SKX with a Pepsi Bezel

Until production ended in 2018, diving watches in the SKX line were among Japanese wristwatch colossus Seiko's most coveted timepieces. Of these models, the SKX009K2 occupies a special place among Seiko fans.

This is due to the watch's color: Unlike its sibling model, the SKX007K2, the SKX009K2 features a dark blue dial and a red and blue bezel, which gives it an unmistakable resemblance to the Pepsi bezel of the world-famous Rolex GMT-Master.

The 42-mm stainless steel case features satin-brushed and polished surfaces. The watch comes with a screw-down crown and is water-resistant to 200 m (20 bar, 656 ft). The timepiece is powered by the reliable in-house caliber 7S26.

The Seiko SKX009K2 in Detail

The SKX009K2's most important characteristic is its Pepsi bezel. The bezel features a silver-white 60-minute scale, whereby the first 20 minutes have a red background. The other minutes have a blue background, and the triangular zero marker features a luminous dot.

Seiko went with a dark, deep blue dial that almost looks black at times, depending on the light. The large, applied dot indices are white and luminous. To improve orientation on the dial, the marker at 12 o'clock is triangular, and the indices at 6 and 9 o'clock are oval. There is no marker at 3 o'clock, which is where the day-date display window is located.

The hands are typical of the SKX line: a syringe-shaped hour hand, a broad, arrow-shaped minute hand, and a slender baton second hand with a round counterweight. The hands all glow in the dark, courtesy of Seiko's own luminous material, LumiBrite.

The Seiko SKX009K2's Case

Like all SKX models, the SKX009K2 is made of stainless steel and looks like its sibling models in terms of design: the upper surfaces are matte, the flanking surfaces polished. The screw-down crown is located at 4 o'clock - also typical of the line - and comes with a crown protector.

The watch is 42 mm across and 13.25 mm thick, and thus makes a rather massive impression. However, the moderate lug-to-lug distance of 46 mm ensures that the SKX009K2 also looks good on smaller wrists.

The Seiko SKX009K2's Bracelet

Seiko offers the SKX009K2 on a five-link stainless steel Jubilee-style bracelet. The individual links are folded, and the end links are hollow. For many, the bracelet is the watch's only drawback; however, thanks to its lug width of 22 mm, the bracelet can easily be switched out for something of higher quality from another manufacturer.

What's inside the Seiko SKX009K2?

Seiko equips the SKX009K2 with the proven automatic caliber 7S26. When fully wound, the watch offers some 40 hours of power reserve. The watch cannot be wound by hand, nor does it offer stop seconds.

Reasons to Buy a Seiko SKX009K2

  • Diving watch with an affordable price
  • Water-resistant to 200 m (20 bar, 656 ft)
  • Blue and red Pepsi bezel
  • Automatic In-House Caliber
  • Day-date display

How much does a Seiko SKX009K2 cost?

You can buy a Seiko SKX009K2 in mint condition on Chrono24 for around 570 USD. A pre-owned model in good condition demands an investment of approximately 320 USD.

Prices for the SKX009K2 have increased a bit in the last two years, at least for like-new pieces. In January 2021, a model in mint condition demanded an investment of roughly 440 USD, while a pre-owned SKX009K2 cost about the same as it does now. As of January 2023, the general upward trend looks like it will continue.

Successor to the SKX009K2

The current Seiko catalog includes the SRPD53, which greatly resembles the SKX009K2 in terms of design. The case is almost identical, as is the blue and red Pepsi bezel. However, the dial features a striking blue sunburst pattern. Furthermore, the crown does not screw down, which means the watch is only water-resistant to 100 m (10 bar, 328 ft). The SRPD53 is powered by the caliber 4R36, which offers stop seconds and manual winding. As of January 2023, a Seiko SRPD53 will set you back about 260 USD on Chrono24.
