Jaeger-LeCoultre - Geophysic E168 (1958) stainless steel chronometer wristwatch of historical importance.
A very rare anti-magnetic chronometer wristwatch with sweep centre seconds and dead stop-seconds device.
Signed by Jaeger-LeCoultre Chronometre, Geophysic Ref. E168, manufactured in early 1958.

MOVEMENT no. 1’331’XXX, cal. 478BWSbr, signed, manual, 17 jewels, soft iron Farraday cage, rhodium-plated, lateral lever escapement, monometallic balance adjusted to five positions and to temperatures, self-compensating Breguet balance spring, parachute shock absorber, hack mechanism, swan-neck regulator. The movement works very well and precisely.

DIAL: Original dial, off-white, arabic and steel baton numerals (applied 12 and 6, as well as 5 minutes index markers (dial ref. 8067/9), luminous steel dauphine hands, indirect center seconds. Slight signs of age at the 12 and 6 and some of the index markers (as shown in pictures).

CASE no. 748’XXX, signed, two-body, polished and brushed, lapidated lugs, inclined bezel, screw-down case back.

Only 1038 pieces of this watch were produced back in 1958 (with three different dials and two different hands) and they are only very rarely offered for sale. Over the last several years only three of them popped up in international premium auctions:

2. PHILIPPS Nov. 14th 2016: a similar E168 with very close movement / case #, different hands + Sputnik box. Result: 68.500 CHF

"A tool watch in its own right, the Chronometre Geophysic E168 was created in 1958 during the official International Geophysical Year, an international scientific project that lasted from July 1, 1957, to December 31, 1958 where 67 nations participated in scientific exploration of our planet’s most inhospitable and unexplored places. It also marked the end of a long period during the Cold War, when scientific interchange between the East and West had been seriously interrupted. Destined for explorers and scientists, the Geophysic had a Bauhaus-inspired, no-nonsense dial optimized for the reading of time. Its chronometer movement (something quite rare for the brand at the time) featured a central hacking seconds hand, a special adjustment system for ease of regulation, as well as a Glucydur balance that would not be adversely affected by the changes in temperature. The movement was further protected thanks to a soft iron anti magnetic inner case, and was thus resistant to 600 Gauss – perfect for the research scientists working on polar bases, in laboratories, and inside submarines. A proud moment in the history of the brand as it was used in the first (three day) submersion from one ocean to another via the most direct route, underneath the ice sheet covering the arctic. Why did their crew used the E168? It is an ultra-precise chronometer (Cal. 478BWSbr) housed in a sturdy steel case with an extra inner-case to protect the movement from the effect of magnetism.
During a ceremony on the 16th of December 1958 two Geophysic watches were presented by the citizens of Geneva to the Submarine Commanders William R. Anderson and J. F. Calvert to commemorate their accomplishment of crossing the North Pole in their submarines in August 1958.
Jaeger LeCoultre launched a “Tribute to the Geophysic” in 2014, however this original Geophysic Reference E168 is one of the most coveted chronometer timepieces for discerning collectors." (Sources: Philipps, Christies et al)

1. Look for listings with the Certified icon

2. Certification by verified watchmakers
Before you receive your watch, it will be checked and certified by a verified watchmaker. Among other things, the watchmaker checks whether your watch matches the listing information and whether it complies with our definition of authenticity.
3. Receive your watch and digital certificate of authenticity
After successful certification, you can rest assured your new watch is genuine. This is confirmed by a certificate of authenticity, which you can access digitally after receiving your watch.
Chrono24 Buyer Protection offers complete security for your payment. If you purchase from a professional dealer, we will hold the purchase amount in our escrow account for 14 days after you receive your watch. This means your money is safe until you're sure you're satisfied with your purchase. Only then will we transfer payout to the dealer. All Certified watches are comprehensively checked against specific criteria by a verified watchmaker. This is how we guarantee the authenticity of your watch.
The check includes the following:
Authenticity check: We check both the exterior and interior of the watch against our definition of authenticity. See also: How do we define authenticity?
Condition check: We check whether the condition of the watch matches the information in the listing, including the complications, winding mechanism, chronograph function, and more. See also: How do we define authenticity?
Scope of delivery check: All additional items, e.g., original box and papers, are checked for completeness and accordance with the model reference.
Stolen watch check: We check whether the watch's serial number is listed in the leading stolen watches databases. This ensures that there are no thefts reported for the serial number.
Every watchmaker who certifies watches under the Certified program has to meet certain criteria. In this way, we ensure he or she has suitable qualifications and technical equipment. Through individualized audits, we also ensure that watches are tested exclusively by experts and in accordance with our standards. The certificate of authenticity is a digital document that cannot be lost, stolen, or damaged. Once you've received the watch, you can find the corresponding certificate in your Chrono24 account. After logging in, you can access it under the "Buy" menu or directly via your Watch Collection.
As the world's leading marketplace for luxury watches, we want to be as transparent as possible with our customers. Therefore, the authenticity of each critical watch component is assessed individually within the certification process.
According to our definition of authenticity, we consider a watch to be authentic if it is either in its original condition (as it was when it left the manufacturer) or contains a maximum of two service parts that do not originate from the manufacturer and do not contain a trademark. Permissible service parts include the crown, bezel, hands, or push-pieces. These will be noted during the certification process and listed under "Notes" on the certificate of authenticity. Customized or modified watches as well as fake or counterfeit watches cannot be certified.

If your watch turns out to be counterfeit, it cannot be certified. In this case, our support team will reach out to you, and you'll receive an immediate refund. If you opted to book the Certified service as an add-on and your watch is counterfeit, you will also receive a complete refund.
If Certified is included in your purchase, certification has already taken place and the condition of the watch will match the information in the listing.
If you booked Certified as an add-on, our in-house watchmakers will carry out a thorough check. If they notice the condition of the watch differs from the information in the listing (e.g., additional scratches) or that key replacement parts without a brand name or logo are present (e.g., different bracelet or hands), they will reach out to you.
You typically have three options of how to proceed:
You accept the results of the certification and decide to proceed with buying the watch. In this case, your watch should be ready for dispatch and shipped to you within 1–3 business days.
You decide to withdraw from the purchase due to the discrepancies found. In this case, we'll ship the watch back to the seller and refund you your payment from our escrow account.
At your request, we can contact the seller and suggest adjusting the purchase price. If you agree to a lower price, we'll send you a partial refund from our escrow account after the watch has been delivered.
Returns under the Certified program are subject to our general returns policy. If you buy from a professional dealer, you can exercise your statutory right to withdrawal within 14 days of receiving the watch and get your money back quickly and hassle-free.
Private sellers are not legally mandated to accept returns.

Although shipping costs vary by delivery location, we charge a set amount for all buyers. Our watchmakers ship your watch directly to you following the certification process. Upon successful certification, you'll receive a digital certificate that confirms the authenticity of your watch.
Regardless of whether you choose a watch that has already been certified or one that can be certified for an extra fee, the process and quality standards of certification remain the same. Certified Included is available for selected watches listed with a minimum price of £900. These watches are certified in advance by a verified watchmaker working in cooperation with the dealer. There is no additional cost for this service.
Certified Optional is available as an add-on for selected watches listed with a minimum price of £5,000. For these watches, you can book certification by our in-house watchmakers for an additional charge of £249.
The certificate of authenticity contains information about the make and model of the watch as well as its date of issue. The watch's serial number, production year, and reference number, as well as the Chrono24 transaction (TC) number are included on the certificate. If, during the certification process, the watchmaker notices any deviations from the original in terms of authenticity or replacement parts, these will be listed as additional comments. Only you have access to your digital certificate of authenticity. You can access it in your Chrono24 account.
Together with your Certified watch, you will receive a digital Certificate of Authenticity that includes an Authenticity Guarantee. This guarantee conforms to our definition of authenticity and is valid for three years from the date the certificate is issued. If you suspect that your watch does not meet our definition of authenticity, please contact our support team and they will review your request immediately. Depending on the outcome of this review, we will either reimburse you for the full purchase amount or replace the component in question so that the watch fully meets our definition of authenticity.
